Khamkhera was the area's headquarters during the Mughal period and was given its present name during Mughal rule. Shahpur was the headquarters of the Pargana, but it was later shifted to Sagoni.
After Bhopal State became a part of the 'C' State of the Union of India, the present district came into existence on 5th May 1950, with Raisen as its headquarters.
In the end, it was decided to retain only seven Tehsils in the district.
